With plastic being so cheap, many people are asking “Is it worth buying bamboo instead of plastic?”. The short and quick answer is “Yes!”.
Given the option to do nothing or do something, many are choosing to do nothing. There is so much lethargy about making greener choices and the biggest blocker is not money, but laziness. So how do we make a difference in an environment that refuses to change?
Well, the simplest answer is to “be the change you want to see”. That’s the hard part if you have no-one showing you what to do next and you are also suffering from lethargy.
Here’s three tips to help you remember:
1. Set reminders on your phone about your environmental goals so that it remains a focal point in your life
2. Set yourself up to succeed by planning your day and strategising how you will implement your Green goals. This could mean putting reusable bags in the car the night before you go shopping or creating a compost bowl in the kitchen that is emptied out every day.
3. Look for eco-friendly products and buy them in bulk so that you don’t have to make spontaneous decisions that are non-eco-friendly.

A lot of my excuses early on were about not getting it right. It was a mindset that said “If you’re not doing it right, don’t do it at all.” That meant I didn’t bother with even the simplest of things like composting in my backyard or not using plastic bags. I had this notion that I had to be all-in or nothing!
I’ve learnt now that it’s more important that I do what I can and not be overwhelmed by all the changes I could make in my life to create a greener home. I’ve started doing small things like reducing my plastic wrap usage, not having take-away coffees and packing water in my water bottle. Each week something new is added to my day-to-day processes that allows me to feel good about helping the planet.
Having said that, sometimes I fall back into old habits and I buy that bottled water or that long black in a takeaway cup. I feel down for a short while allowing the sadness to remind me that I enjoy planning my day for a healthier, greener environment.
